In the summer of 2016 naturalist illustrator Natalya Zahn accompanied a group of U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologists on a field work expedition to Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge; the trip was organized through USFWS, in conjunction with the Voices of the Wilderness artist in residency program. The group spent one week camping at a site along the Jago River, located on the Coastal Plain, between the Brooks Mountain Range and the Arctic Ocean. During that week, the biologists worked to collect data from a Long Term Ecological Monitoring site, while Natalya recorded the landscape and organisms of the tundra through sketchbook drawings and paintings. Once back in her studio, Natalya used the reference materials she collected in the arctic to create a children's book: a reflection on that transcendent week in the wilderness, and an exploration of the creatures (observed and researched) that inhabit the unique and extreme environment that is the arctic tundra. The book, titled ARCTIC YEAR, is available below for preview and download, in both full-color (COLOR), and a black & white "coloring book" (LINE) version.

PROJECT DOWLOAD & ASSEMBLY
This project consists of one nearly continuous horizontal scene that measures 8.5 x 90" in total; once assembled it accordion-folds into an 8.5 x 10" book. The artwork for print is contained in a multi-page PDF which has been segmented to print easily on NINE horizontal, letter-size pages. Instructions for assembling the book are clearly noted on each printable page (you'll need an Xacto or scissors to trim pages, and glue or tape to connect them).
